Chattanooga Parks No. 9 of 10

Harrison Bay State Park

Tennessee's first state park - forty miles of lake shoreline, a marina, a Nicklaus golf course and the camping this list otherwise lacks.

Why Harrison Bay State Park is No. 9

The first state park Tennessee ever had, twelve hundred acres on roughly forty miles of Chickamauga Lake shoreline, north of the city. No state park charges an access fee, so walking in costs nothing.

It is the answer when this list's problem is that you want to sleep outside: 128 RV sites with water and power, some taking rigs up to sixty-five feet, plus primitive tent-only sites, bathhouses in each of four camping areas, and a group camp. Their own pages disagree on whether the tent-only count is 21 or 27.

Seven trails with published mileage, of which the Starwalk Trail is the one to know - 0.55 miles, paved and interpretive. Bay Point Loop is the long one at 4.30. There is a 4.5-mile bike loop rated for all abilities.

Also here: a marina at Tennessee River Mile 478 with covered and transient slips and the Dockside Cafe, a boat ramp, boat rentals, swimming, a playground, three picnic pavilions, an aviary, a camp store, and the Bear Trace golf course, designed by Jack Nicklaus and the state's first registered Groundwater Guardian Green Site.

The accessibility page is unusually specific: accessible restrooms, picnic areas, trails and a fishing pier, all-terrain wheelchairs free with notice, named accessible campsites, an adult-sized changing table at the concession stand - and the honest admission that the dump station is not accessible.

Currently building a new playscape, with a warning to campers that work can start before quiet hours end.
