Chattanooga Climbing Gyms No. 3 of 3

Crux Conditioning

Not a proper climbing gym per se. A training room with a mirrored Tension Board 2, a spray wall and a coach who writes plans for climbers.

Why Crux Conditioning is No. 3

Crux Conditioning is third here on a technicality: it is not a climbing gym and does not pretend to be. There are no routes and no ropes, though it has a spray wall to boulder on. What it has is the training room, and for one kind of climber that is the whole point of going indoors at all.

A 12x12 Tension Board 2, mirrored, is the centrepiece - mirroring matters more than it sounds, because it means problems set for the standard layout climb the same in reverse and the app's whole catalogue is open to you. Alongside it, a spray wall, a campus board and hangboards. Nothing there is for a day out.

It is run by Paul Corsaro, who coaches strength for Power Company Climbing, and the rest of the floor is barbells, dumbbells, kettlebells and small-group coaching for outdoor athletes. The climbing is one half of a strength-and-conditioning gym rather than a wall with weights in the corner.

You cannot wander in. It is a private facility run by reservation. Their own advice is that you want to be climbing V3 or harder before it makes sense.

A drop-in session is $20 and five climbing sessions are $85, which is the cheapest way into a board in this city. A month on the floor, with the coaching, starts at $99.
