Chattanooga Parks No. 7 of 10
Sculpture Fields at Montague Park
A landfill turned brownfield turned the largest sculpture park in the Southeast, with fifty large works in a field.
Why Sculpture Fields at Montague Park is No. 7
More than fifty large-scale sculptures across thirty-three acres of open ground on the Southside, with over a mile and a half of trail through them. It is the largest sculpture park in the Southeast and it is free, parking included, 365 days a year.
The site's history is the best part. The land was misused as a construction landfill in the 1940s and closed in 2003 over environmental concerns - it had become a brownfield. What is there now was built on top of that.
It is a City of Chattanooga park operated by a 501(c)(3), on a forty-year lease, which is why the acreage depends on who you ask: the nonprofit says thirty-three acres for the part it manages and the city says 45.5 for the whole of Montague Park.
Dog friendly with waste stations, a bike rack, and a soccer field on the city's side. The trails are gravel and no accessibility claim is made. During events the main lot is often limited to disabled permits, members and vendors.
